Running Shoe Energy Return and Biometric Sensors

The Perfect Foam and (Shoe) Energy Return

Can the right foam support a sub-2 hour marathon? Brands like Nike and Adidas think so and they’ve been chasing it for decades. A 35 year old paper published by the director of research at Nike focused on the balance between weight reduction and cushion. A 100g reduction in weight can decrease aerobic demand by 1%. But there are limits to lightweighting. Too little cushion can result in too much shock to the runners muscles. Nike’s ZoomX foam is about a third the weight of Nike’s standard foams, but has 13% greater energy return.
